Creativity challenges the status quo. ~Ruth Richards
The Mural Project brings awareness and beauty to issues facing the island. One out of ten islanders are HIV positive. It is projected that one out of four islanders will have HIV within ten years. Students who have taken the Life Skills Planning Course and/or have been in other WYM groups wanted to do something. They wanted to do something big. They wanted to change the status quo.
In a place where no one talks about HIV they are making issues surrounding HIV big and visible. They are doing this by painting murals in their communities. With themes of embracing HIV positive members in the community, education about respect for self and protection of self, and the theme of being the change, they are starting some big conversations.
These teens want to change world. They’re starting at home.
If you’re interested in helping to change the status quo by donating funds for paint (which is very expensive here), you can put a note next to your donation letting us know its for the Mural Project.
If you’d like to volunteer as a guest artist with the Mural Project, we’d love to have you. Please contact us.
